  8. One of the more confusing aspects of using BBS systems for the first time is
  9. the understanding and handling of files that have the extension ".ARC" such
  10. as BOYAN.ARC or BBSLIST.ARC etc.

  12. Files with an extension of ".ARC" were created using a utility which can take
  13. one or more files  and combine all of them together into a single file. The
  14. utility places the ".ARC" extension onto the resulting file to indicate to all
  15. others that the file was created through the arc utility and will need to be
  16. "un-arc'd" in order to put the files back into their original state.
